This scenario actually happened!

I was giving a senior German banker a tour of the Department.  We came to a room where a telephone engineer was installing new lines. Being the typically gregarious garrulous Glaswegian, he quickly divined that my companion was from Germany and asked what part.

“Hamburg” came the reply.

With his head down still connecting wires, he continued  in the Glasgow vernacular  by saying that his father used to go there on a regular schedule.

Out of politeness, my guest enquired what did he do?

The reply was short and to the point:

“He was a bomber pilot”

(Exit extremely embarrassed.)
